A 41-year-old Banffshire fisherman, Mr Francis Watt, 26 Seafield Street, Portknockie, was lost overboard in the Moray Firth yesterday from the Buckie fishing boat Avoca.
No one saw the tragedy, which occurred about six miles off Buckie.
The vessel, which is skippered by Mr Joseph Smith, Kingsmead, West Cathcart Street, Buckie, was returning to her home port after completing her day's fishing operations when Mr Watt was discovered missing by his crewmates.
The Avoca made a search of the area, but found no trace of the missing man and headed for Buckie.
Skipper Smith said last night: "Mr Watt was last seen by one of the crew cleaning a 'fry' on the deck. Sometime later he was found missing and we immediately turned the boat and searched the area for about an hour and a half, but without success."
Mr Watt was a married man with no family."
