He married Jane Donaldson at Parish of Seafield, Banffshire, Scotland, on 21 October 1870.3,4 He married Jessie Findlay at Carmelite Street, Banff, Banffshire, Scotland, on 8 July 1876.5 He was the informant for, and present at, Catherine Innes's death at 26 Shore Street, Macduff, Banffshire, Scotland, on 28 November 1888.6,4,5 James died on 10 May 1912 at 6 Manner Street, Macduff, Banffshire, Scotland.5
