     James Pirie was born on 26 April 1899 at 72 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1,2 He was the son of David Pirie and Jane Steel. His family was known by the tee-name of "Buxer".
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1901 census at 72 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: David Pirie, head; Jane Pirie, wife; William Pirie, son; Alice Pirie, daughter; John Pirie, son; James Pirie, son.3
James Pirie was a fisherman and later a grocer. William Pirie and James Pirie owned the steam drifters 'True Vine' BF 198, 'Fisher Lad' BF 204 and 'Orphir Land' BF 131.4,5,6 They was a witness at John Pirie and Barbara Jane Gardiner's wedding at Seafield Arms Hotel, Cullen, Banffshire, Scotland, on 24 February 1922.7,2 He married Agnes Smith at The Victoria Hotel, Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 12 March 1924.8,2

The Buckie and District Directory for 1925 shows that William Pirie and brother James Pirie owned the steam drifter BF 198 True Vine.10,2
