George Pirie probably died circa April 1877. It is likely that George Pirie "Skipper" drowned at sea having been swept overboard from a fishing boat. There are newspaper reports that the Portknockie boat Water Lily (BF 286) was caught in a gale in either the Pentland Firth or the Moray Firth and two of the crew, George Pirie "Skipper" and Alex Wood "Reid", washed overboard and drowned. There does not seem to have been registration of their deaths.9
