James Mair

     James Mair was born on 25 July 1870 at Parish of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; There is another IGI record from the Parish of Seafield, Banff for the birth of James Mair. This was probably a transcription from the original birth record in the Parish of Peterhead.1 He was the son of George Mair and Euphemia Pirie. His family was known by the tee-name of "Shanker".
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1871 census at 191 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: George Mair, head; Euphemia Mair, wife; Alexander Mair, son; George Mair, son; James Mair, son; Jane Pirie, visitor; Helen Pirie, servant.2

He was listed as head of household's son in the 1881 census at 4 Fountain Street, Banff, Banffshire, Scotland. James Mair was a fisherman. He served in the crew of the Zulu fishing boat 'Evangeline' BF 1952.

He married Margaret Ann Wood at Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland, on 9 September 1892.5 James died on 17 January 1905 at Stronsay, Orkney, Scotland, at age 34. He perished with the Portknockie Zulu fishing boat 'Evangeline' BF 1952 that was wrecked off Stronsay during a great storm. The entire crew were lost. His body was not recovered.
