John Mair Wood

     John Mair Wood was born on 12 February 1894 at 15 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of James Wood and Catherine Mair. His family was known by the tee-name of "Pirie".
He was listed as head of household's son in the 1901 census at 15 Portknockie, Banffshire, Scotland. Those recorded in the household were: James Wood "Pirie", head; Catherine Wood "Pirie", wife; Wm Mair Wood, son; Maggie Wood, daughter; Elizabeth Wood, daughter; John Wood, son; Alex George Wood, son; Jessie Ann Wood, daughter.2
John Mair Wood was a deck hand in the Royal Naval Reserve. John died on 17 October 1917 at sea at age 23. He was serving as a deck hand aboard the minesweeper, H.M. Trawler "Ruby" (FY 2970). She was torpedoed while assisting the sinking steamer Polvena and sunk by the German submarine UC-79, off Ushant (Ouessant) at the southwestern end of the English Channel. There were no survivors, 18 persons were killed.3,1
